Making that Valentine's Day booking? Get it right, look before you book

Happy couples across South Bucks who are planning a romantic meal for Valentine's Day are being reminded to 'look before they book' and check the food hygiene rating of their chosen eatery.

Whether you're staying at home for a takeaway, going out for a candlelit meal in a restaurant make sure you check the hygiene rating first. It's really easy to check and you'll be safe in the knowledge that you are dining somewhere hygienic. Just go online to the Food Standard Agency's website or if you're out and about look for the green and black door sticker, if you can't see it just ask a member of staff.

Unfortunately you can't tell a restaurant's hygiene standards by how clean and tidy the staff look. It's the things you can't see - like germs spread by bad hygiene practices - that you need to consider. A food hygiene rating inspection checks all the things you can't see.

Food premises are given a rating from five (best) to zero (worst) by Environmental Health Officers at Chiltern District Council and South Bucks District Council's joint Environment Team who inspect eateries looking at various things including:

  • how hygienically the food is handled - how it is prepared, cooked, re-heated, cooled and stored;
  • the condition of the structure of the building(s) - the cleanliness, layout, lighting, ventilation and other facilities; and
  • how the business manages what it does to make sure food is safe and so that the Environmental Health Officer can be confident standards will be maintained in the future.
